I'm taking a break from Tech this Tuesday, to share something I had no idea was happening or even existed. I consider myself a Science Fiction geek. I wouldn't say I am a die hard, but I know what I like and usually stick to that. But I recently found out about a local convention where the real Science Fiction aficionados, gather to enjoy.
At the Build Windows conference in California, reps for the company laid out it's plans for it's next version of Windows, Windows 8, as well as some of it's other products, like XBox and Windows Phone 7. It's all going to the cloud. This article on Extremetech lays it out in more detail, but here's the highlights.
After Apple's iPad was released and how it was selling as well as changing things, other companies wanted in. So we started to see new tablets being developed. Samsung developed the Galaxy using the Android software, and HP gave us a WebOS tablet, which it then stopped selling soon after. But now we have another entry into the tablet market. GameStop.
So last time I checked the calendar, it was 2011. The 21st century. New technology is being developed all the time to improve on older tech or replace it. Some say my beloved hobby of Ham Radio is old and outdated, yet it proves it's worth when disasters, like Irene happen. Then, there is tech like the fax machine. It's like it's a tech zombie because it won't die.
The New York Times R&D Lab is releasing info on a new mirror, dubbed "The Magic Mirror", that allows you to have access to the internet from your bathroom. It's built using Microsoft's Kinect Motion Sensing Technology for physical cues and voice recognition to give you the information you want, when you want it. This may be one of those claims that is just too good to be true. Two companies in Taiwan are saying that together, they have developed a USB v3.0 flash drive that reportedly holds 2 Terrabytes of data. That is more storage than the average hard drive in new computers being sold today.
If you like playing games on the computer, you may find some of this news kind of interesting. I sure did since I am more of a computer gamer then a platform one, even though I own a Wii. Google's strategy is to move computing to the cloud so they are also moving gaming their, with Google Chrome as a gaming platform.
After being in the house all night Saturday and then again most of the day, watching Steve Caporizzo doing marathon coverage of the storm, Kim, my daughter and I, started to feel a little stir crazy. So we decided to venture out when there was a break in the rain and see what if any damage was out there. So we took a walk around the area we live so see "what was what".
I was sitting on the couch with the fiance', watching the news when the announcement was made. Steve Jobs is stepping down as CEO of Apple. My jaw hit the floor and I proceeded to to wonder where it would all go from there. The frenzy and chaos. Cats and dogs living together, MASS HYSTERIA! Then I realized, it's just Steve being Steve.
HP has been in the computer business from pretty much the start of it. Now after all these years, they are dropping the PC business right after they dropped what they were hoping was an iPad killing tablet, that was on the market for just 4 months, and went no where.
It was a long day at my "regular" job Friday, as I was anxious to get to the show and enjoy the people and music. After navigating the traffic on 787 to get to the sitter and drop off my daughter and then up to Saratoga and navigating the traffic at SPAC, I made it in alive!
