Q103 Remembers Chris Cornell’s Final Capital Region Performance

The news of Chris Cornell’s passing this morning has been a tough pill to swallow. So to take away from the sadness we thought we’d take a look back at the good times and revisit his final Capital Region Performance.

This morning the world was dealt a terrible blow when news quickly spread that singer, songwriter, performer, and all-around amazing human being Chris Cornell had passed away, an apparent suicide, following a performance with his band Soundgarden in Detroit.

Many of us who have been living on Chris’ music for decades, or even a lifetime, are feeling pretty heartbroken today from this tragic loss. I know I’m still having a hard time wrapping my head around it. I thought that instead of being sad all day it might be more beneficial for all of us to remember the good times and to remember the music.

I am so thankful that I finally got see Chris Cornell live! For years the opportunity kept missing me for one reason or another with Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog and even his solo gigs. That was until last summer when the the musical universe finally brought me to a Chris Cornell show that unfortunately ended up being his last performance here in the Capital Region.

He came to town on his solo ‘Higher Truth’ tour and it was a SOLD OUT show at the Palace Theatre in Albany on July 1 of 2016. I actually didn’t have a ticket and the show was sold out so I was kicking myself for missing out (again.) Then, I got the call. The call from the boss man saying he had an extra ticket for me and I couldn’t have been more ecstatic!

Fantastic Negrito opened up the show (who is awesome by the way, def check him out if you get the chance) and from the minute Cornell stepped foot onstage, you were just mesmerized by his presence and then he opened his mouth and… that voice. That voice is like no other. While his ‘Higher Truth’ tour was pretty much all acoustic and didn’t bring that kind of intensity that I’m sure a full band would bring, you were still singing along to every song and hanging on his every word. It was definitely an experience I’m grateful to have had and one that I will never forget!
