Liman Discusses Differences Between Splinter Cell Game and Film

While interviewing Doug Liman about his new movie, ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ IGN pressed the director for details about his upcoming film adaptation of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell.

Liman stated that he is currently at work on the script with the movie’s star, Tom Hardy. He expressed his confidence in the project, stating, “I think we have a great take on how to make an awesome film out of that.” When asked if Sam Fisher would be a younger character than we’ve seen in the games due to the age of the actor portraying him, Liman said “Everything about Splinter Cell will be younger. It’s a chance to come up with a new franchise that is fresher and newer and younger.” Finally, IGN asked about Sam Fisher’s famous three-lensed multi-vision-goggles, and whether or not they’d make it into the film. Liman was cagy, responding, “Some of the tropes of the game will for sure be in the film, but also the fun of that is when you lose them. To strip that stuff away and really make the character have to operate without it.“

Splinter Cell has always been a fairly cinematic game franchise, so the transition from game to film should be a relatively smooth one. We’ll find out when the movie opens sometime next year. Now if we could just get the Assassin’s Creed film team to open up a little bit about what to expect from that adaptation.
