With Assassin's Creed Syndicate's release on the horizon, it's time we look back at the series best and worst entries. The war between the Templar and Assassins have been going on for centuries, and there have been all kinds of adventures where we played as a famous Assassin (and occasional Templar) to unearth secrets that could alter the future of humanity.

Each entry of the series often has you using a machine called an Animus to relive your ancestors' memories in order to investigate the Templar's ongoing quest to find and use ancient artifacts from an ancient, pre-human species to subjugate the world and remove freedom from the equation of society. The earlier entries of the series revealed that a solar storm made this advanced precursor species extinct, but they took precautions to try and save the world from it in the present day as they predicted another would happen in the year 2012. Even after all of that, the Templar continue to search for their world-changing relics.

The Assassin's Creed series mixed attributes from the Prince of Persia, Metal Gear Solid and Hitman series while giving everything an old world makeover. Ubisoft tried to be meticulous about the societal and architectural details of the historical locations you explore. We've visited the Third Crusade, Italian Renaissance (too many times), American Revolution, Pirates of the Caribbean, French Revolution, Seven Years' War and all kinds of other historical points in time. Assassin's Creed Syndicate will be taking us to the Industrial Revolution of England in the mid-1860s, but it's time we look back at why we love digging a Hidden Blade into the neck of some unsuspecting Templar.
