Walking Dead Writer Tapped to Script ‘Star Wars’ Feature

Lucasfilm

If you enjoyed the somber tone and strong character development of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead: Season One, then you might be a little bit more excited for the next ‘Star Wars’ feature film.

Gary Whitta, writer of ‘The Book of Eli’ and part of the team that scripted The Walking Dead, has been tapped to write the first stand-alone ‘Star Wars’ film. Due to arrive in 2016, the feature is rumored to follow the exploits of a single, seminal character from the franchise, and be separate from ‘Star Wars: Episode VII.’

“From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, ‘Star Wars’ has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer,” Whitta said in the official release. “It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I’m still pinching myself.”

Whitta will join ‘Godzilla‘ director Gareth Edwards on the project, which might mean the upcoming lizard-starring sequel might be in search of a different director. Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan are also working on stand-alone features set in the ‘Star Wars’ canon, though it’s unclear just how much, if any, influence those films will have on Edwards’ and Whitta’s entry.

All eyes might be on the under-production seventh entry in the ‘Star Wars’ saga, but with Dec. 16, 2016 already set as the premiere date for this new movie, we’re eager to see what awaits. Fingers crossed for some secret Easter eggs like Clem’s hat.
