Copeland's defense team argued that she killed her father because she feared for her life. Saying that her father had a drinking problem, evidence showed he was had been drinking before being killed, and pointed a gun at her following her confession of stealing his debt card and making charges on it.

Prosecutors claimed it was done in cold blood as she laughed during interviews with detectives and lied at first saying that someone had broken in to their home.
