The New York Yankees couldn't make good on runners in scoring position last night and it cost them a crucial game 5, and the chance to extend their season.  The Detroit Tigers win 3-2 and move on to the American League Championship Series.

It didn't start off good for the New York Yankees as pitcher Ivan Nova gave up two first inning home runs.  Those 2 runs would be hard for the the Yankees to catch, even though the Yanks pitching staff, almost all of them, gave up only 1 more run the offense just couldn't capitalize on runners in scoring position.

The Detroit Tigers got a great start from starting pitcher Doug Fister.  He goes through 5 innings, giving up only 1 run on 5 hits.  He also struck out 4.  Max Scherzer,  Joaquin Benoit, and Jose Valverde were able to hold the Yankees and get some big outs to propel the Tigers to victory.

A fitting end to the game came when Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez stuck out for the final out.  That pretty much sums up his disappointing season.  He finishes the year with just 16 homers and in the series with Detroit he only notched 2 hits in 18 at bats.

The Tigers will now move on to face the Texas Rangers in the ALCS.  Tonight we will figure which teams will be moving on to the National League Championship Series.  The Brewers and Diamondbacks play game 5 of their series this afternoon at 5p.  That will be followed by Cardinals and Phillies game 5 at 8:30p, both games will be on TBS.
