Thursday afternoon, prior to the New York defeating the St. Louis Cardinal by a score of 7-6, on a walk-off moon-shot by the polar bear, Pete Alonso, the Mets announced that Max Scherzer would be out for 6 to 8 weeks. Scherzer removed himself from the game in the middle of a batter with 2 outs in the 6th inning. Even though they are in first place and twelve games over .500, the Amazin's need pitching help.

In 2022, every American League East victory is going to be crucial for the New York Yankees. That's why Sunday night was so important. Even though there are 159 games left for the Pinstripes, manager Aaron Boone knows this division will decided by a few games or less. A three game sweep would have been sweet but Boston showed that they too plan to stick around this season with their 4-3 victory in series finale.

The New York Yankees had been struggling to find that identity that carried them through a blistering late August, 13 game winning streak. The Bombers were coming off of a disappointing weekend last week after Cleveland pasted them twice. Three wins against the Texas Rangers prior to heading into Boston on Friday was a good tune-up for the wild playoff atmosphere in Fenway Park this weekend. Six head to head games with the two teams you are fighting for playoff spots is just the way the New York Yankees franchise likes it.

Last night the New York Mets were in Boston to take on the Red Sox at Fenway Park. I was flipping between that and the Yankees vs. Rangers game, while following the Tampa Bay Rays vs. Toronto Blue Jays game. This was all in an effort to keep up with the American League Wild Card race and keep a scant eye on the dim playoff hopes of the disastrous baseball franchise that I root for.

Tuesday and Wednesday, those old "Jeter" jerseys, along with the new "Judge" pinstripes will turn "blue and orange" as the Mets head to Fenway Park in Boston to take on the Red Sox. This is an important week for the Bombers as they try to gain ground on the Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays, who are facing the Tampa Bay Rays this week, in the crazy American League Wild Card race. Aaron Boone and his crew from the Bronx would love nothing more than a nice two game sweep of Boston by their National League brothers from Queens. The Yankees trail Toronto for the second Wild Card by 1/2 game.

The big question now facing both teams, is will they get there? Red Sox are 24-25 since the All Star break. Conversely, the Yankees are 32-16. Both teams are being chased by Seattle, Oakland and the an old division friend stacked with talented youth, the Blue Jays. The Mariners and Toronto are playing great baseball right now while the Yankees struggled to take 1 of 3 games against the Orioles this weekend and were blown out by the Blue Jays on Monday 8-0. The Red Sox have lost 2 straight and continue to flounder.
