Six-Year-Old Drummer Jaxon Smith Rocks Out Foo Fighters’ ‘Pretender’ on YouTube
This past weekend, a YouTube video of adorable 6-year-old self-taught drummer Jaxon Smith playing drums to the Foo Fighters hit ‘The Pretender’ went viral. As one viewer commentated, ”[It] took John Bonham long enough to reincarnate himself…,” referring to the late Led Zeppelin stickman.
The video was uploaded in February but did not go viral until recently. Jaxon’s proud dad commented, “Got up this morning to watch the Wimbledon final and man these overnight comments are just insane! Thx for the love. This vid had 2,000 views for 4 months and yesterday BOOM 50,000.”
He went on to say, “Jax is a regular kid, just finished grade one. In 2005 he was born at 1 pound, born almost 4 months early. Quite a rough start to life the first couple years but now you’d never know. At the age of 3 he started to notice when I put on music DVDs of bands I like and he started tapping on the couch with chopsticks.”
His father continued by stating that Jaxon started out with tapping toothbrushes and by the age of five he got an electronic drum kit. No one in his family plays the drums and he has never had a drum teacher. He explains, “He taught himself by watching live DVD concerts of bands like Foo Fighters, Rush, Muse and just copied what he saw. He’s done a few live shows and seems to drum better when he has someone to perform for.”
This miniature drumming prodigy loves hammering away at the skins but he does it on his own time. “As far as practicing, he really doesn’t do it in any structured way. I’d say these days he drums on a kit maybe one hour a week. But in his spare time he has his iPod on and must be soaking it all in.”
Jaxon’s father concludes, “If I do a video with Jax it’s usually one take, once he’s drummed the song good luck getting him to drum it again for a week or so. Jax loves tunes… he drums when he wants to, no pressure at all. I’ll be sure to show him all the positive comments and ROCK ON!”
Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins better watch out! This little guy is a natural behind the kit!
