Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck is days away from its May 4 premiere on HBO, and just ahead of its public release, director Brett Morgen says his research has unsurfaced enough previously unreleased Kurt Cobain music to warrant an entire album, which he expects out this summer.

“We’re going to be putting out an amazing album this summer,” he told Bedford and Bowery, adding that it “will feel like you’re kind of hanging out with Kurt Cobain on a hot summer day in Olympia, Wash., as he fiddles about.”

Morgen then clarified that the album won't be a Nirvana album, but just Cobain doing "things you never expected to come out of him.”

In the interview, Morgen describes when he first entered Cobain’s storage unit and stumbled upon “200 hours of never-before-heard or rarely heard music,” some of which will appear on the forthcoming album. The director added that some of the music featured “jam sessions with Courtney [Love], some jam sessions with various friends and Nirvana, his first demo tapes, his Fecal Matter demos, his mix tapes and oral canvases like Montage, a lot of silly spoken word stuff and not-silly spoken word stuff like the story he told of losing his virginity, covers of the Beatles songs, it just rant the gamut.”

Morgen’s forthcoming documentary includes a scene chronicling an audio autobiography the director found in Cobain’s archives, in which the late singer-songwriter detailed a suicide attempt on train tracks when he was in high school.

“When Kurt says he went to lay down on the train tracks, he’s not laying down on the train tracks in my animation, he’s watching the train,” Morgen explained. “It’s only one shot but it was an important distinction because what I was trying to suggest was: I don’t know if he really did this. What I believe is that these feelings that he’s describing and the way he experienced these feelings is honest and truthful. And as we both know, there’s truth embedded in fiction. So I put that shot in there just as a kind of wink wink, nudge nudge -- who knows, we’ll never know.”
