Muse Call Copyright Lawsuit ‘Complete Nonsense’

As you may have heard, the members of Muse are currently embroiled in a $3.5 million lawsuit filed by a songwriter who has accused the band of stealing his ideas. The trial has yet to begin, but the band has already issued its verdict, calling the whole thing “complete nonsense.”

The plaintiff, Charles Bolfrass, says he reached out to Muse and a pair of other bands in 2005, approaching them about co-writing a rock opera. Unsurprisingly, no one took Bolfrass up on his offer, but he claims that his ideas — and an image from one of his storyboards — were appropriated for ‘Exogenesis,’ a three-song suite on the band’s 2009 album ‘The Resistance.’

Saying the claim is “categorically denied,” a Muse spokesperson told reporters, “It appears to be based on a ‘screenplay’ which the band never received or saw, produced by someone the band has never heard of. It speaks volumes that the album in question was released a full three years ago, and yet this is the first that has been heard of these groundless allegations.”

In between meetings with lawyers, Muse is preparing to release its next album, ‘The 2nd Law,’ on Oct. 1. You can watch the video for the record’s leadoff single, ‘Madness,’ right here.
