Four NEW elements have been discovered by scientists but have yet to be named. Some very loyal Motorhead fans are now petitioning to have one of them named after Lemmy Kilmister.

CNN is reporting that scientists have discovered four new elements that are to be added to the periodic table, making it the latest update since 2011 and completing the seventh row of the periodic table.

The four new elements are currently known primarily by the numbers 113, 115, 117, and 118, or by their temporary names "ununtrium, (Uut or element 113), ununpentium (Uup, element 115), ununseptium (Uus, element 117), and ununoctium (Uuo, element 118)." Scientists are now tasked with coming up with their permanent names and symbols for them.

According to the IUPAC, new elements can be named after a mythological concept, a mineral, a place or country, a property or a scientist.

The good folks over at Metal Injection have come across a petition by Motorhead fans that are attempting to get one of the heavy metals named after Lemmy. The petition called "Help Make 'Lemmium' the New Chemical Name for Heavy Metal in the Periodic Table" is already up to 49,453 signatures and states:

Heavy rock lost its most iconic figure over Christmas with the sudden and unexpected death of Ian 'Lemmy' Kilmister.  Lemmy was a force of nature and the very essence of heavy metal.  We believe it is fitting that the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry recommend that one of the four new discovered Heavy Metals in the Periodic table is named Lemmium.  An astrological object (a star) has been named Lemmy to meet the IUPAC naming recommendations

The goal the petition is looking to reach 50,000 signatures. Feel free to add yours NOW!
