The Dead Cross concert scheduled for the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles on Aug. 21 was canceled after frontman Mike Patton was reportedly injured in a car accident on his way to the show.

Word of Patton’s injury reached fans at the venue, where fans waited for Dead Cross to take the stage after opening act Secret Chiefs 3 finished their set. Instead, guitarist Mike Crain and drummer Dave Lombardo stepped out to inform the crowd that the show wouldn’t be going ahead as planned.

“There’s been an accident,” Crain’s heard telling fans in the fan-shot footage below. “Mike was in an accident. It’s not grave, but he’s unable to be here tonight. He’s hurt. I’m sorry. We apologize. We’re gonna reschedule. And tickets will be refunded at points of purchase.”

Adding that he and the rest of the band would be leaving the venue to be with Patton as he recovered, Lombardo added, “On behalf of the band, we’re really sorry.”

Touted as something of a supergroup upon Patton’s arrival late last year, Dead Cross unites former Slayer drummer Lombardo with Faith No More frontman Patton as well as Crain and bassist Justin Pearson, both veterans of the hardcore punk outfit Retox. The group’s self-titled debut, which arrived Aug. 4, gave Patton a chance to make what he’s called a “traditional hardcore record.”

“It is very pointed, direct and visceral. Like, I wasn’t going to play keyboards, add samples or any kind of orchestration. It was like, ‘Yo, just go for it,'” Patton told Rolling Stone. “I got a chance to do a pencil-in-your-eye record.”

Dead Cross are booked more or less solidly through late September, starting with another Los Angeles show tonight (Aug. 23). There’s no word yet on how any of those dates will be affected by Patton’s accident.
