He's an award winner, Oscar nominee and is best known for his various roles, including his presence in Revolutionary Road, Vanilla Sky and Boardwalk Empire (HBO). Now, Michael Shannon will be able to add another role to his resume, as he has just been cast as the villain in the new Superman movie.

Shannon will be playing the antagonistic General Zod (also from Krypton) against Henry Cavill's Superman in the new film, Superman: Man of Steel.

Zod has appeared before, once in the original, 1978 Superman, and then again in the sequel, Superman II, both of which were played by Terence Stamp.

Zod is not only one of Superman's most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don't, said Zach Snyder, the director of the new film. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.- reuters

Superman: Man of Steel, is scheduled to release in December of 2012. Maybe he'll help save the world from the apocalypse that is scheduled for that same time. What do you think?
