As we recently reported, Jack White’s Third Man Records has plans to re-release Elvis Presley’s first-ever recording, “My Happiness,” for Record Store Day. White recently purchased the historic record -- which also features Presley’s “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin” -- for $300,000 at auction. Now, Third Man has given fans a behind-the-scenes look at the process of digitally transferring the recording in order to re-press it for the RSD reissue and other releases to come.

After White purchased the Presley recording, he met up with archivist Alan Stoker at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville to transfer the 1953 direct-to-acetate recording. Watch the process in the video above.

In the above video, White notes that the original label is upside down and later peels it back only to discover the other side shows it was once used for the Prisonaires’ “Softly and Tenderly.” The Prisonaires released the single on the Memphis, Tenn.-based Sun Records in 1953; Presley recorded “My Happiness” in Sun Studios in Memphis that same year.

Third Man will release a 10” copy of “My Happiness” on Record Store Day on April 18. A 7” remastered version will be released later down the road.

TMR also has plans to rerelease the White Stripes’ fifth album, 2005’s Get Behind Me Satan, for Record Store Day.
