Exploding Manhole Covers Spotted in Schenectady
Watch out for exploding manhole covers in the Capital Region.
According to The Times Union, firefighters are investigating an explosion on State Street in downtown Schenectady where an underground explosion occured today (Thursday). At least one manhole cover was said to have been moved due to the explosion on the block by Proctors Theater and Bow Tie Cinema. No injuries have been reported.
The Daily Gazette reported loss of power to businesses in part of the area and emergency response crews on the scene. Deputy Fire Chief Michael O'Clair said that the manhole wasn't smoking as of 12:20pm but Nico's and Lyle's Hoagies had lost power. National Grid blames past fires on worn, underground power cables. State Street has seen its share of manhole fires in recent years, some of which launch the covers explosively into the air.
So something else to be vigilant about. Be on the lookout for exploding manhole covers and be safe out there.
