Civil Servant With Many Hats a ‘Hometown Hero’

This week’s “Hometown Hero,” Stephen Freiberger, of Stillwater, has worked a multitude of jobs as a civil servant, including working as an EMT, Army veteran, police officer, and firefighter.

24 year old Stephen Freiberger named a “Hometown Hero”

Stephen is only 24 years old. In regards to all the work he has done for those around him, Stephen explained that “we all have a job to do” and he is “simply doing [his].”

As part of the “Hometown Heroes” series, we’ve partnered with County Waste, Latham Ford, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region and Awards by Walsh to celebrate local unsung heroes for their good deeds and honorable work. We asked Stephen a few questions. Here’s what he had to say:

Q: What made you want to be a “civil servant” as an EMT, Army Veteran, Police Officer, and Firefighter?
A: Civil Service has always been a big part of my life and is deeply ingrained in my family roots. I wanted to keep the tradition of helping people in their hour of need.

Q: What’s the most rewarding thing about what you do?
A:
The most rewarding aspect of what I do is the positive reaction that comes from the people I have helped. You see people in either their best moments in life or their worst. The job of any civil servant is non biased effort to be the best you can regardless of the situation.

Q: What are some of the challenges?
A:
Some challenges that any civil servant faces is the time that is taken away from you and your family in order to be there to help the community. Like being away for Christmas and Thanksgiving or maybe even missing a child’s birthday. The world doesn’t slow down for anyone. Rain or shine we are here to help, 24/7. No exceptions.

Q: Do you consider yourself a “hero?” Why or why not?
A: I do not consider myself a hero in anyway. I am just a small piece of the big picture that in some cases goes unnoticed. But I wouldn’t want it any other way.
