As we've seen, the Seattle music community is a very close one, and one of the acts to emerge in the early '90s with the grunge boom was Candlebox. During a recent show in Toledo at the Ohio Spring Fest, the band offered their musical tribute to late friend and fellow Seattle scene musician Chris Cornell, who died last week at the age of 52.

Singer Kevin Martin stepped up to the mic to share his thoughts, explaining, "I met Chris when I was 16 years old in Seattle and have been friends with him for a long, long time. I'm still trying to come to terms with what's happened. He was an amazing human being, a brilliant artist and an incredible talent, and I'm still a little bit in shock from this."

Candlebox chose to honor Cornell by taking on Temple of the Dog's "Say Hello 2 Heaven," one of the songs from the band's lone studio album that featured Cornell's amazing vocals. Cornell formed the band with members of what would become Pearl Jam in order to pay respect to late Mother Love Bone vocalist Andy Wood. Just last fall, the group played their first ever extended tour in support of the album to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their album release.

For Candlebox, it was their first time performing "Say Hello 2 Heaven," but they did an admirable job with the track considering the emotion of the moment. Watch fan-shot footage in the video above.

The tributes since Cornell's death have been many in both written and musical formats. His death was ruled a "suicide by hanging," but the family has discussed that the prescription drug Ativan may have played a role in the singer's actions and they are awaiting the toxicology report for further information.
