As Butch Walker prepares for the release of his seventh full-length album, 'Afraid of Ghosts,' he recently sat down with Esquire magazine to chat about what fans can expect from the new record -- and his experience working with Ryan Adams and Bob Mould.

"I tend to battle with myself when I'm making my records," he said in the interview. "That's why I worked with Ryan ... because I wanted somebody else to come in and tell me what they thought would be a good record for me to make and just get some new ideas."

Walker also unveiled his recording process for 'Afraid of Ghosts': no computers, no fixes, all on an "old tape machine" in Adams' Pax Am studio in California. As he put it, "I learned how to make records on tape, on a reel-to-reel. I came up that way ... I don't want to rely solely on digital correcting and timing and editing pitch and all that, and I love Ryan's studio because it's all old-school gear with tape and we never used a computer at all for this album."

And as for Mould's contribution to the song, 'Father's Day' (written after Walker's dad passed away), he said, "When Bob came in, I didn't realize that we were both kind of celebrating a year to that week of our dads passing ... he was real close with his dad and when he heard that song, I think that struck a chord with him."

If you haven't heard the first single from the album, 'Chrissie Hynde' -- Walker "grew up a massive Pretenders fan" -- stream it below:

And thanks to Esquire, fans get another glimpse into the LP in the form of the title-track:
