Watch Some Breakdancing Monks Celebrate MCA Day

Today marks the second anniversary of the death of Beastie Boy Adam “MCA” Yauch. And to help celebrate MCA Day in Brooklyn, a bunch of monks busted out some pre-festivity breakdancing moves in Union Square yesterday.

Yauch, a Buddhist, was well known for his active role in Tibet’s independence movement. He founded the Tibetan Freedom Concert, which ran almost annually from 1996-2003. The Tibetan monks’ breakdancing yesterday was their way of paying tribute.

As you can see in the above video, the quartet of dancers busts some pretty solid moves as a Beasties track plays from a boombox in the background. Are they legit? Who knows? Who cares? Pretty cool either way.

Yauch passed away on May 4, 2012, after a three-year struggle with cancer. He was 47. MCA Day, now in its third year, took place yesterday at Littlefield Performance and Art Space in Brooklyn, an area the Beastie knew a thing or two about.
