Don Rickles’ talents were seemingly limitless: An outrageous insult comic, a gifted dramatic actor, a welcome sight on stages and screens (big and small), and a constant presence whose career endured for decades, often surpassing his contemporaries. And now he’s gone on to join them, as the legendary Rickles passed away today, April 6, at the age of 90.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice smashed box office records over the weekend, and while we wait for the dust to settle to see just how successful it will become, Zack Snyder has been opening up about a few key moments in the film. The divisive superhero epic offered a few cameos and surprises (and one very surprising cameo), including an ending that left some audience members shocked. It’s that particular plot development that Snyder addresses in his latest interview, which sheds some light on his future Justice League plans. Spoilers ahead!
Thanks, Deadpool! As predicted by many (including Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn), it looks like studios are already taking the wrong lesson from the record-breaking, R-rated superhero film. While Fox has already given the green light to an R-rated Wolverine sequel, Warner Bros. is getting a jump start on their own edgier superhero offerings, as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will have an R-rated alternate version when the film hits DVD and Blu-ray.
Rumors have persisted for years that Lionsgate wasn’t quite done with the Saw franchise — even though the last sequel was titled Saw 3D: The Final Chapter. But titles are meaningless as long as there’s money to be made, and with that pesky Paranormal Activity franchise out of the way (for now), it looks like Lionsgate is reviving the franchise that introduced us to James Wan, Jigsaw and a multi-film timeline so convoluted it would give Quentin Tarantino the spins.
James Franco and Dwayne Johnson have at least one thing in common: they both make us wonder when they ever have time to sleep. With their insane ability to commit to so many projects and the fact that they never look worse for the wear, we must begin to wonder: are they immortal? In the case of Johnson, at least, we can believe it. The actor has revealed new details on his upcoming Rampage project, along with a GIANT list of his current filming schedule / work commitments — which would make any mere mortal man weep. But yeah, he’s immortal, so.
The O.J. Simpson trial was a cultural milestone for an entire generation. Just as our parents and grandparents remember where they were when JFK was assassinated, many of us can recall with distinct clarity where we were when Simpson notoriously fled the police in a white Bronco with a gun to his head. The media coverage was breathlessly sensational, but there is nothing sensationalized about The People v. O.J. Simpson, the flagship season of Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story, which is undoubtedly the very best thing Murphy has ever produced.
It’s the end of the year, which means lots and lots (and lots…and lots…) of features previewing 2016's highly-anticipated new releases, like Assassin’s Creed. Justin Kurzel’s adaptation of the beloved series has all the makings of a good video game adaptation; in fact, it could be the first genuinely good video game movie (your Silent Hill mileage may vary). Two new photos have arrived online giving us two different versions of Michael Fassbender for the price of one. What a bargain.
The trailers for Deadpool have shown off the anti-superhero film’s anti-superhero sense of humor, some interesting supporting characters boasting some enhanced abilities, lots of violence, plenty of one-liners, and even a few glimpses of X-Men pal Colossus. And while we’ve seen a bit of Ed Skrein’s Ajax, we haven’t seen much of the fighting that goes on between the big bad and the Merc With a Mouth.
The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens isn’t just a casual coffee table book filled with concept art that inspired the film’s designs — it also offers a wealth of interesting information regarding several of the major characters, their origins, alternate designs, and several elements that either evolved or were excised completely during production. For instance, Supreme Leader Snoke was almost a woman, and Poe Dameron was nearly a Jedi or a bounty hunter instead of a pilot.
If you’re a fan of the Halloween franchise, then this news is not only kind of a big deal, but it might be a little surprising. After 20 years, Dimension Films has lost the distribution rights to the series, and Miramax is now shopping those rights around to potential buyers, which could mean big, big changes for the future of the classic horror franchise — as well as the death of the sequel that’s been in development for the past year.
Back in 2013, 20th Century Fox tapped Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow to write the screenplay for an X-Force movie, but when Tim Miller’s Deadpool concept footage “leaked” online, Fox fast-tracked the Merc With a Mouth’s solo film and put X-Force on the back burner. We still don’t know much about X-Force — is Wadlow also directing it? Which characters will be included in the lineup? Will familiar X-Men characters appear? — but new concept art may give us an indication of where Fox is headed with the project.
J.J. Abrams revved up the engine on the ol’ Star Wars ship, launching the series on a new journey with The Force Awakens, but declining to return for the subsequent sequels. Instead, Rian Johnson (Looper) and Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) will be steering the franchise from here on out, directing Episodes 8 and 9, respectively. Johnson is in production on Episode 8 right now, and according to The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley, the script is “very good.” How good? Abrams regrets turning down the chance to direct it.
