How many times in your life did you need to solve a Rubik's Cube in less than 6 seconds? Not many for me either, but this video was just really cool to watch and I had to share it. It's called the CubeStormer II which leads me to believe there was a CubeStormer I at some point and this is an improved model. According to it's website, it can solve a cube in 5.27 seconds. Faster then most cars I can afford, to reach 60 miles an hour from 0. It has also set a Guinness World Record for the fastest cube solving robot in 2011. It was commissioned by a company called ARM Holdings and built by a guy named Mike Dobson, with the software to handle this feat written by David Gilday. It runs on an Android device and is built using Lego Mindstorm NXT kits. So guys and gals, it's still OK to play with Legos after our toddler years.

It uses a pre-made table of moves to let it solve the cubes, with the main limitation being the motors. So I'm guessing this could solve a cube even faster? This is definitely not a weekend project. But watch the video and enjoy. If you're amazed like me, you'll watch this like 6 times in a row just for the lulz. And for the record, the fastest human solver is a guy in Australia named Feliks Zemdeg and he does it in 5.66 seconds.

And just for good measure, here is another video with a little more detail about the robot itself. This thing is really complex! I for one welcome our new Rubik's Cube solving robot overlords, and can't wait to see how much time they shave off with CubeStormer III.
