As someone who is single with no children this figure astonishes me, should it?

On average  normal american households will spend a combined total this year for back to school shopping of a whopping $78.5 billion!! Say what??? That is an insane number. I recall my parents waiting until say the last week of August each year and me and my mom would make the trip to Walmart to pick up some supplies and clothing. I don't ever recall how much she would spend but it never felt like it was all too much. Each household will individually spend $673.

I still am baffled by even that figure. I mean like I said above, my family was full of Walmart shoppers. I never saw a pair of "designer" clothing until I was probably 16. I had a set or two of Nike's but who didn't? So I ask you, roughly how much did you spend?
