The service is called "Tip411" and is an easy way for you as a citizen to get information to the Police fast.  All you need to do is text "APDTips" along the information you have to 847411.  Once they receive the information from you a detective can respond back promptly all the while you remain anonymous.

This seems like a great tool to help people and the police to get on the same page.  Texting seems to be the quickest way to get a hold of someone now  a days and why not the police too?  Albany Police Chief Steven Krokoff said:

This program enables citizens, who otherwise might be reluctant to contact police or provide information to communicate anonymously through a text message. It continues our effort to strengthen our relationships with the community who want to rid their neighborhoods of crime.
