Albany is known for its architecture, commerce, culture, institutions of higher education, and rich history. But living here does not mean we really appreciate it or even have looked at it other than the Capital of New York.

Coming back from being out of town, I always take 787 to get back to Clifton Park from the Thruway because I enjoy the view of the Capitol building, the Corning Tower, and the Egg. Those are spectacular buildings. Usually, that is about all I do, drive-by. I don't go downtown that much, maybe to a concert.

Recently I found out that there is a reason to take a closer look at downtown and what it has to offer. Downtown Albany hosts a wide variety of accessible, free public art by local, regional, and internationally renowned creators. There are five exhibits that you can see for free.

  1. The Capital Walls-Capital Walls is public art by Albany Center Gallery, Albany Barn, and Albany Parking Authority. This project inspires our community with uplifting, educational, or thought-provoking works of public art.
  2. Downtown is Pawsome-Downtown is Pawsome is an art project based on Albany's famous canine landmark Nipper. Though the exhibit has ended, numerous pieces remain on display in downtown Albany.
  3. Open Gallery transforms Albany's side streets and alleyways into a vibrant, colorful, outdoor gallery featuring the work of a diverse range of talented artists.
  4. Signs of Greatness: Albany Stories is an exhibit that tells stories of Albany's settlement and development all through art.
  5. Stand in the Sole of Albany Dutch Clog Sculptures-10 giant "wooden shoe" sculptures celebrating Albany's rich Dutch heritage by local artists were part of the exhibit. Only two remain in Federal Plaza Park and outside the Downtown BID and Capitalize Albany office at 21 Lodge Street.

The great thing about these art exhibits, they are free and in our own backyard. Might have to take a walk downtown!
