The mantra of high school is “no fun” right up to the day you graduate. This is a story about a high school graduating class whose diplomas were withheld for the way they celebrated.

I should be clear that the way they celebrated their commencement was the same as every cliché movie or TV show celebrates a graduation.

Ridgewood High School students outside of Chicago were asked by school officials to not throw their caps in the air preceding the graduation ceremony. Mistake No.1 by this school was putting the idea that their hat could be tossed at all. You say “don’t” and now they've got to do it. That’s just the rules of the high school game and rules are rules, everyone knows that.

“…we expect dignified behavior… In past ceremonies, people have been hit by flying caps. We'd just as soon not have graduates leaving with cuts and black eyes." - Superintendent Dr. Robert Lupo, NBC Chicago

Who cares what happens to the students' eyes at this point. These are newly-graduated young adults. "Not my students, not my problem" is what you should be saying, Mr. Super Nintendo Chalmers.

And my word of advice to the students who did not receive a diploma: who cares! You graduated and it is over. Chances are you have already been accepted into college and the paperwork has started. College does not care if you received a cheap leather folder with a piece of paper in it. All they care about is if you pay them. I’ve graduated from high school and college and never in my entire life and working career have I had to prove to someone that I graduated and show them a copy of my diploma.

Congratulations students of Ridgewood High, you stuck it to the man and apparently some of your fellow classmates' eyeballs.
