NY State Could Lower Legal Blood-Alcohol Limit
A proposed bill in Albany could lower the state's legal blood-alcohol limit for drinking and driving.
According to CBS New York, Assemblyman Feliz Ortiz introduced a bill on Friday that would bring the legal blood-alcohol limit from .08 to .05. He cited a recommendation that came from the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine that concluded that thousands of lives could be saved from drunk driving accidents by lowering the limit to .05. Typically, it takes a most women 2 drinks and most men 2-3 drinks to reach a blood-alcohol level of .05. All 50 states have the same .08 threshold with Utah voting last year to lower the rate to .05. Check out Felix Ortiz's tweet below. A vote on the new measure has not been scheduled yet.
What are your thoughts on the proposed bill? I'm for anything that will help save lives. Drinking and driving is no laughing matter, and this may deter people from grabbing that extra unnecessary drink.
