Valentine's Day is fast approaching and whether you're going on a first date or not it's likely the romance will last all night and maybe even into the morning. Before you enjoy yourself, you have to protect yourself and all this week and month is National Condom Week so prepare yourself before hitting the town this Friday.

To some, Valentine's Day is just some stupid holiday that was marked in order to sell a bunch of crap that nobody truly needs, but to others it's the most romantic day of the year. I always love going to a store that night and seeing the line of males waiting to be checked out, holding day-old flowers and candy that no one else wanted to buy. This year, make sure your significant other has a third thing in his hand- condoms.

We all know the importance of protection so I will not preach it to you like you're in high school all over again- I'm just saying don't get caught up in a moment unless you're prepared. This is more important if you are still getting to know someone who you haven't discussed sexual history with- not only will it prevent you from becoming a mommy or daddy but it will keep you safe while you're having fun.

National Condom Week originated at the University of California at Berkeley and has since grown into educating schools, Planned Parenthoods, AIDS groups, pharmacies and more.

Since the induction of NCW there have been several slogans created throughout the nation that sum up the very essence of its purpose, for example:

Don't be silly, protect your willy
When in doubt, shroud your spout
It will be sweeter if you wrap your peter
No glove, no love!

You're probably laughing out loud too and it's OK because the idea is to educate through humor- the best medicine. Go here to read more comical slogans.

If you have any questions or concerns about safe sex, contact your local Planned Parenthood organization.

Have a happy (and safe!) Valentine's Day- don't forget to "wrap your gift!"
