Herbal Supplement Recall Ordered by FDA for Salmonella

According to News 10 abc, the FDA has ordered a Las Vegas company to pull it's Kratom herbal supplements off of the market.  The reason for this being that they tested positive for Salmonella.  Apparently there's a nationwide outbreak with up to 90 cases of Salmonella related to Kratom, and according to News 10 abc, the FDA had to intervene as a result of one particular manufacturing pharmaceutical company failing to cooperate with regulators.

For those who aren't familiar with Kratom, it's a controversial herbal supplement.  In certain doses, it actually acts as an opioid, and and according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, it can also cause psychosis.  Though it's herbal, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse the leaves of the Kratom tree contain a psychoactive opioid, and the supplement can cause dependence, and withdrawals that mirror opiate withdrawals as well.  News Channel 13 even did an investigative report in February of this year on the supplement, as a drug of concern in the Capital Region.  Either way, sounds like there's lots of reasons- Salmonella included- to stay away.
