Xbox One Development Kits Getting More GPU Bandwidth

A Microsoft representative claims that Xbox One’s development kits are now up to 10 percent larger in GPU bandwidth after making the Kinect optional to the system.

Microsoft confirmed to Eurogamer that a recent upgrade for development kits in GPU performance of up to 10 percent is tied to the removal of the Xbox One’s Kinect, which has changed the accessory from being mandatory to optional. This means that studios working on new Xbox One games now have access to a higher performance rate from the graphics processing unit.

“For consumers, simply unplugging Kinect will not impact the performance of Xbox One,” the Microsoft representative said to Eurogamer. “The June SDK released to developers gives them access to additional GPU resources previously reserved for Kinect and system functions. Accessing the additional GPU resources is done by the developer, and how developers choose to access the extra GPU performance for their games is up to them.”

When asked if more Xbox One games would be reaching 1080p and 60 fps, the representative said the following:

“How developers choose to access the extra GPU performance for their games will be up to them. We have started working with a number of developers on how they can best take advantage of these changes. We will have more to share in the future.”

Microsoft reiterated the notion for consumers by stating “removing the Kinect will not impact the performance of Xbox One.”
