With two women on the ballot today, one of which is the first woman nominated by a major political party, this is a pretty fitting tribute.

With as much of a circus this entire election has been you have to admit there is a pretty amazing piece of history happening during this election. There are two women on the Presidential Voting ballot today. Jill Stien of the Green Party and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton who just so happens to be the first woman ever, nominated my a major political party.

Although it may not seem as though, it wasn't too long ago that women in this country weren't even allowed the "right" to vote and although she passed away 14 years before women legally earned that "right" women’s suffragist leader Susan B. Anthony put a lot of those wheels in motion to make it our "right". Via The Verge, Susan B. Anthony did some pretty "punk rock" things for women's rights in this country:

  • She attempted to vote in Rochester in 1872 — and got arrested. She was publicly tried and convicted, but refused to pay the $100 fine.
  • Anthony set up the World’s Congress of Representative Women at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Five hundred women from 27 different countries gave speeches to over 150,000 spectators, making it the most well-attended political congregation at the Fair.
  • She was the first woman to appear on US currency who was not a fictional character.
  • Anthony went before Congress every year from 1869 to her death in 1906, asking them to consider an amendment allowing women to vote. When it was finally passed in 1920, it was called the “Susan B. Anthony amendment.”

Well today, during such an historic election day, women across Upstate New York have been showing their appreciation by stopping by Susan's grave at the  Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester NY and leaving their 'I Voted' stickers on her headstone. In fact there have been so many visitors already that the cemetery is leaving the back gate open late and setting up temporary lights so that people can visit up until the polls close.

News 8 WROC Rochester has a fb live stream going currently that you can view to take a break from the circus of the election and witness a truly moving tribute to a revolutionary woman.

Also, if you haven't done so yet, please don't forget to get out and VOTE today. No matter who you're voting for.
