Will Dallas Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban Be The Start of Facebook’s Decline? – Tech Thursday

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has made a pretty gutsy decision to move the team as well as his other companies away from using Facebook as their main social media strategy to other social media sites, like Tumblr and the new MySpace. He says he’s tired of the huge fees Facebook is charging for reaching out to the fans.

He tweeted a picture of a Facebook screen grab, which showed an offer from Facebook to reach 1 million people for $3 thousand dollars. I’m not the owner of a major sports franchise, but does Facebook really do that? Make you pay to reach out to your fans or customers? And do they do this every time? If they do, then yeah, I would want to bail too. What if other companies decide to follow Cuban’s lead and jump ship from Facebook? This is just a long line of issues the company must now deal with along with the complaints from privacy groups on how Facebook makes changes to privacy settings for new features, or even existing ones, and not inform the users.

Mark Cuban is a tech savvy guy, so his decision to move could have real ripple effects. Once other companies see that there are alternatives, then the whole thing is up for grabs. This could be the start of an exodus that Facebook would rather wish, didn’t happen. Will it kill Facebook? I doubt it will, but it would be a big boost for Tumblr and might also spark that second wind that MySpace has been trying to get back for sometime now, since Facebook stole it’s thunder. The blood could be in the water, and the sharks will come. Let’s also not forget that Facebook is already trying to weather a pretty poor IPO showing and this will not help it’s image to shareholders.

I’m sure Cuban will be posting more about it now that it is making news that the Mavericks are switching sites, so expect a little more drama in the future.
