Rolling Stone sat down with Bono back in 2005 to discuss among other things, why he is always wearing the sunglasses.  Back when U2 was first coming out Bono wasn't wearing them, so why dos he now?  Is it just his thing?  A fashion trend?  At least it's not that god awful hat the the Edge use to wear back in the day, I'll take the beanie over that any day.  So why the sunglasses?  He says that they are there to protect his sensitive eyes.

I have very sensitive eyes to light. If somebody takes my photograph, I will see the flash for the rest of the day. My right eye swells up. I've a blockage there, so that my eyes go red a lot. A magazine across the pond was referring to me as 'old red eyes.

According to Yahoo, Bono first became associated with the sunglasses back in 1992.  He first wore them to portray a character in the video for the song "The Fly", to symbolize the larger than life rock star.  Sometime between then and now he must have developed the whole sensitive eye thing.  The 20th anniversary edition of Achtung Baby will actually come with a set of replica Bono sunglasses.  That album is due out later this month.
