Vanilla Ice’s Ninja Turtles Mac & Cheese Commercial Is, Um, Cheesy and Terrible
Like almost everyone else who’s ever heard ‘Ice Ice Baby,’ we sorta assumed Vanilla Ice would have just gone away after his one big hit way back in 1990. You know the song — the one that angered classic-rock fans, hip-hop heads and anyone else with taste with its unparalleled offensiveness.
But somehow he’s managed to sustain a career on the fringes of pop culture over the past two decades with movies, motocross racing, reality TV and a bunch of other stuff guys like Vanilla Ice end up doing after they become a national punch line for a generation or two.
His latest bid for relevancy in a culture that’s cast him to the sidelines of everything that matters is a commercial for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. But it’s not just any boxed mac and cheese that Ice is selling here; it’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mac and cheese. And if you haven’t flushed the thought from your brain, you may recall that Vanilla Ice recorded a song called ‘Ninja Rap‘ for another TMNT product years ago.
And as you’ll see in the above commercial, Ice is rapping the “Go, ninja, go” part from that track as he stocks shelves with the green-boxed and turtle-shaped mac and cheese. It then breaks down into a supermarket danceathon between the guy who once held the record for the fastest-selling hip-hop album of all-time and some poor kid’s mom, who busts a move while the ninja, um, rap plays out in the background.
It’s all setup, of course, for a “word to your mother” joke, which Vanilla Ice busts out to the eye-rolling kid who’s watching his mom get all super-funky fresh with a ‘Behind the Music’ casualty everyone still wishes would just go away.
If you have a couple spare minutes in your life to waste on such things, there’s also a behind-the-scenes video in which the Ice Man spreads the love for everything Ninja Turtle. He even shows off a leg tat to prove his devotion to the sewer-dwelling reptiles. You can watch it here if you have nothing else to do:
