Coming into Selection Sunday, the Albany Great Danes were unsure as to where they were going to be playing and as what seed. Now they know, as the selection committee has chosen them as a 15 seed and the opponent of the 2 seed Duke Blue Devils in Philadelphia in the midwest region.

The America East champion Great Danes went 24-10 this season with a 9-7 record in the America East, winning their conference tournament championship game over the Vermont Catamounts yesterday.

Joe Lunardi, ESPN’s bracketology expert, had UAlbany pegged as a 16 seed and in one of the First Four play-in games just hours before the bracket was announced.

The selection brings up a number of interesting memories for those involved in the tournament histories of the programs competing and the America East itself.

Duke was a 2 seed last season, losing to 15 seed Lehigh in the second round of the tournament, making them one of two 2 seeds to lose in the second round last year (2 seed Missouri also lost to 15 seed Norfolk State).

For the Great Danes, the placement of the game brings back memories. When UAlbany gave UConn a scare, nearly becoming the first 16 seed to defeat a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the game was played in Philadelphia.

Even the America East has had some recent experience with being a 15 seed against Duke. Back in the 2008-2009 season, Binghamton, led by controversial Troy native Emanuel “Tiki” Mayben, made the tournament as a 15 seed, losing to Duke in the then first round.

Can the Great Danes pull off the upset and send Duke home for the second straight year to a 15 seed? Only time will tell.
