TSA Searching Cars In Airport Parking Lots Without Notifying Owner First

Flickr: lan Ruskin/Crashworks

Laurie Iacuzza returned from a trip to the Greater Rochester International Airport only to find a yellow slip on her car saying it had been inspected by the TSA. No one reached out to her prior to the inspection and she only found out thanks to the slip. This is actually something that can happen that the TSA has been doing as of late.

Laurie told WHEC:

I was furious. They never mentioned it to me when I booked the valet or when I picked up the car or when I dropped it off.

Laurie valeted her car and the inspection was done by the valets under the order of the TSA. Apparently only valeted cars are ones that can be ordered to be inspected at the discretion of the TSA, but why only those?

WHEC talked to John McCaffery of the TSA to ask why only the valeted cars are inspected

Those vehicles that are in the garage, short term long term parking, even if they carry pretty large amounts of explosives, they would not cause damage to the front of the airport. But for those who use the valet, the car could be there for a half hour or an hour so there is a vulnerability.

It should be noted that there is a large sign in the valet lot that states your car can and will be inspected if the TSA deems it necessary. However, Laurie said she would have liked to been told in person that the inspection could happen. She isn’t mad at the security measure rather at the fact that she was not notified prior to it happening and had to find out after her return.

Something to think about the next time your part your car at the Albany International Airport parking lots.
