Happy Birthday today (June 30) to Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual). He's 48. Other rockers celebrating include 80's guitar god Yngwie Malmsteen (53) and singer Brian Vollmer of Helix (61).

Phil Anselmo joined Pantera in late 1986. In 1990, the band was signed to Atco Records and released the album Cowboy’s from Hell. They released Vulgar Display of Power in 1992 followed by Far Beyond Driven in 1994, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Tensions in the band began to arise in 1995 with Anselmo's heroin addiction (he almost died of an overdose in 1996). The Great Southern Trendkill was released in 1996 and Reinventing the Steel in 2000. Pantera went on hiatus in 2001 and eventually disbanded in 2003.

Anselmo formed the band Down in 2001 with Pepper Keenan from Corosion of Conformity In 2003 he formed another band, Super Joint Ritual, with drummer Jimmy Bower. He has many other projects as well. For more on Phil Anselmo, check out his official website here.
