‘This Is Spinal Tap’ Celebrates 30th Anniversary

On March 2, 1984, a little film called ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ quietly hit theaters, but its influence on pop culture and the music world has resonated loudly over the past 30 years. It’s not just one of the funniest rock movies ever made, but one of the funniest films of all time.

The rockumentary followed the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap, featuring David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) as they stumbled their way across America in support of their new album ‘Smell the Glove.’

While songs such as ‘Big Bottom’ ‘Stonehenge’ and ‘Sex Farm Woman’ provided a hilarious soundtrack to the movie, the real influence the film had on pop culture came in its more subtle scenes. Lines like ‘These go to 11′ (watch above), ‘none more black’ (watch below) and ‘Hello Cleveland’ permeated their way through the music world in the years to come. Whenever you’re at a rock show or listening to music and someone yells, ‘Turn it up to 11,’ you can thank ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ for that.

The film became so popular that the band Spinal Tap actually became a real touring act, with McKean, Guest and Shearer taking on their roles as St. Hubbins, Tufnel and Smalls on stages throughout the world.

If you’re a rock and/or metal fan, and haven’t seen ‘This Is Spinal Tap,’ there’s no better time than now. It’s almost sacrilegious not to have seen it. In the meantime, enjoy a few of the more unforgettable scenes above and below.
