The Walking Dead Renewed For Season 5

Before the launch of Season 4 for The Walking Dead, AMC announced there would be a spin-off series to the popular comic-turned-television hit. Now after 3 episodes into Season 4, AMC says they have renewed the show for a fifth season.

AMC president Charlie Collier has this to say about the renewal:

We are very happy to make what has to be one of the most anti-climactic renewal announcements ever: The Walking Dead is renewed for a fifth season.

This is a show that has erased traditional distinctions between cable and broadcast. Its expanding base of passionate fans has grown every season, most recently — and most notably — with the season four premiere earlier this month, which broke viewership records for the series and became the biggest non-sports telecast in cable history. On behalf of the incredible team on both sides of the camera, thank you to the fans and here’s to more Dead.

Walking Dead Creator Robert Kirkman will return for Season 5 as executive producer while also working on the spin-off. As for that spin-off, Kirkman has only said that it will take place in the current Walking Dead world but somewhere else in the country. There will be no tie to the original series outside of the zombie outbreak and the fight for survival. So don’t expect cameo cross-overs right off the bat.

In the meantime, look for the Season 4 “mid-season finale” to happen around episode 8, which is 4 weeks away after this Sunday.
