The Offspring received generally positive reviews for the title track from their ‘Days Go By’ album, but their follow-up single, ‘Cruising California (Bumpin’ in My Trunk),’ is proving to be one of their more polarizing songs in some time.

The group just debuted the video for the song, and it’s clear they’re entering “song of the summer” territory here. The video features an unsuspecting family being pulled aboard a party bus where Dexter Holland, Noodles and the crew are living large inside. They’re rocking out their poppy new single with some sexy girls dancing around the pole inside, a keg on tap, and the California coastline passing by outside the window. Who wouldn’t want to hop on board?

Where the disconnect may be coming from with some fans who’ve been vocal in the video’s comments sections is how seriously they take the song. The track definitely has it’s poppy side, and with Holland giving way to a grinding female vocalist reciting the lyrics “I know you heard that bass, bumpin’ in my trunk” may be taking some of the band’s harder rock fans by surprise. Add in an auto-tuned robot voice singing “California” and it could easily fit in at pop radio as well.

After recently declaring themselves “so punk, we’re not punk at all,” the group is showing a more diverse side to their sound. Still, the band has definitely made more than a few fun-time and somewhat jokey songs over the years (‘Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)’ anyone?), and this would fit right in.

The video concludes with everyone eventually emerging for the bus for a stop at the beach where the Offspring perform a concert for their congregation of partiers. While there are more serious songs on ‘Days Go By,’ it’s clear that with this song and video, the Offspring are ready to let the good times roll.
