Stephen Colbert may be the wildly successful host of a popular late night talk show on a major television network, but that doesn’t change who he really is: a huge nerd. Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson said of Colbert, “I have never met a bigger Tolkien geek in my life.” The Late Show host appeared in The Desolation of Smaug and hosted a Hobbit panel at Comic-Con. Although it might seem like good form for someone who has just landed a sweet new gig to kowtow a smidgen to their predecessor, soon-to-be 'Late Show' host Stephen Colbert doesn't need to force such emotions when it comes to current host David Letterman, because, man, does he really love the comedian and his show.

Much as 2014 shook the late night landscape with Jimmy Fallon's ascension to the 'Tonight Show' throne, 2015 will similarly upend the 'Late Show' as 'Colbert Report' host Stephen Colbert takes over for the retiring David Letterman. Colbert himself stopped by Letterman's couch today to talk about the transition, the first footage of which has made its way online!
