System of a Down’s John Dolmayan to L.A. Crowd: When We Come Back, We’ll Have a New Album!

System of a Down played their one-and-only show scheduled for this year on July 29 at California’s Hollywood Bowl. The Los Angeles crowd went nuts for the band, but after System closed with ‘Sugar,’ drummer John Dolmayan brought the cheers to a new decibel level by promising a new album when they play L.A. again.

System of a Down made the very most of their solitary 2013 U.S. performance, unleashing a set list totaling 28 songs. Along with staple tracks ‘Aerials,’ ‘Chop Suey!’ and ‘B.Y.O.B.,’ System whipped out deeper cuts such as ‘X,’ ‘Peephole’ and ‘DDevil’ — all of which hadn’t been performed in the last decade.

After System finished the night with ‘Sugar,’ John Dolmayan stepped up to Daron Malakian‘s mic and exclaimed, “Next time we come back here, we’ll have a new f—ing album!” (Watch above.)

For System fans everywhere, this news is phenomenal — but what exactly does it mean? Dolmayan has stated in the past that there will be a new System of a Down release at some point, although the drummer attributed no timeline to his promise.

Bassist Shavo Odadjian has also made it public that he wants to create a new album, slamming frontman Serj Tankian in the process via a bizarre post on his personal Facebook page. “It’s Serj who doesn’t want to do a new album!!!!,” Shavo posted. “So please stop harassing us about it!!! We are just waiting for Serj! Now he might hate me for exposing the truth, but I had to…”

System of a Down’s last two albums, ‘Mezmerize’ and ‘Hypnotize,’ were both released in 2005. After eight long years, System fans are rabid for new material. We’ll be sure to keep our ear to the ground, so keep checking back for potential updates on System of a Down’s next studio album.
