Super Mario Bros. New Infinite Lives Glitch Discovered

Almost thirty years after the release of Super Mario Bros. for the NES, a skilled player has discovered a previously undocumented glitch that allows Mario to gain infinite lives.

As demonstrated on the YouTube video posted by Games Haya (spotted by IGN), players need to first beat the game, opening up the second quest, which replaces Goombas with Buzzy Beetles. Once in the second quest, player one finishes World 1-1, and then dies immediately on 1-2. Player 2 then finishes the first two levels and utilizes a warp pipe to reach World 5-1. On World 5-1, Luigi reaches the secret beanstalk, and lets himself be killed by a Hammer Brother while on the vine. This makes the vine sprout up on World 1-2, where Mario can climb halfway up and infinitely kick the Beetles against the wall, gaining infinite lives in the process. Luigi, of course, gets nothing because he’s Luigi.

It’s an admittedly roundabout way of gaining infinite lives, especially considering there is a much easier method on World 3-1. Still, the fact that people are still finding new tricks and exploits in a game that released during the Reagan administration is a testament to the lasting power of Shigeru Miyamoto’s masterpiece.
