Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon Discusses Split From Thurston Moore, Breast Cancer Bout

We’re not going to say “we told you so,” because, well, we never went on the record to express our personal opinion on this subject, but privately, we had our sneaking suspicions that the breakup of Sonic Youth‘s Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon in late 2011 was caused by infidelity on the part of the former. Turns out we were right, and that a “starstruck woman” from the indie community, as Gordon puts it, also played a role.

Gordon speaks in depth about the split for the first time in the new issue of Elle magazine. The piece’s author, Lizzy Goodman, writes:

Some years ago, a woman Gordon declines to name became a part of the Sonic Youth world, first as the girlfriend of an erstwhile band member and later as a partner on a literary project with Moore. Eventually, Gordon discovered a text message and confronted him about having an affair. They went to counseling, but he kept seeing the other woman. “We never got to the point where we could just get rid of her so I could decide what I wanted to do,” Gordon says. “Thurston was carrying on this whole double life with her. He was really like a lost soul.”

The breakup of Moore and Gordon after 27 years of marriage caused widespread shock, disbelief and sadness — to the outside world, their relationship seemed so damn happy and just straight-up cool. “We seemed to have a normal relationship inside of a crazy world,” Gordon says. “[I]t ended in a kind of normal way — midlife crisis, starstruck woman.”

There aren’t too many “erstwhile band member[s]” of Sonic Youth, and the only person to leave the band in last decade-plus is producer/indie rock utility man Jim O’Rourke, who joined as bassist and synth player in 1999 and left after 2004′s ‘Rather Ripped.’ We won’t take it further than that, but expect some names to start flying soon.

What’s more, Consequence of Sound reports, Gordon learned soon after the dissolution of her marriage that she was suffering from DCIS, a noninvasive form of breast cancer. ”I’m fine; it’s literally the best you can have,” she apparently told Elle, explaining that she underwent surgery for the condition. “I didn’t do radiation or anything, but I was like, Okay, what else is going to happen to me?”
