Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan Defends Axl Rose’s Decision to Reject Rock Hall Induction

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has been spitting a ton of venom lately while doing interviews for the release of the band’s latest album, ‘Oceania.’ Whether declaring his desire to “piss on Radiohead” or calling former guitarist James Iha a “piece of s–t,” Corgan hasn’t been holding back in the least. In one of his most recent interviews, Corgan took the time to defend Guns N’ Roses singer Axl Rose and his decision to reject a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

“I’ve actually come out in a few interviews and said that I actually really appreciate the position that Axl was in and why he didn’t want to go,” Corgan tells Australian radio station Triple M. “I think he felt like he was being set up, and in a way he was wise not to go because he would only have come out like he was being a spoiled sport. He didn’t want to play nice with the old team, and he obviously has his personal reasons. But also, the minute he gets up on stage with the original band, then everything else he does that isn’t that is like, it’s almost as if he’s trying not to do something, and he hasn’t been doing it in many years.”

Corgan continues, “There’s an expectation, it gets put on me. I’ll be looking on my Twitter and someone will write, “Why don’t you get back together with your original band?” Oh is it the lawsuits, which lawsuit do you want me to forget? That kind of stuff. Behind the scenes, it’s not as simple as that you know we all changed. All of us are different people than we were in the ’90s. I’m not sure I would have anything to talk to them about, I have plenty to talk about with my band now.”

Corgan also took his promotional tour to the Howard Stern show, where he discussed his breakup with Jessica Origliasso of pop duo the Veronicas and how he “sort of went out” with Jessica Simpson.

The Smashing Pumpkins mastermind also appeared on Piers Morgan Tonight, where he took the time to talk politics and his disappointment in President Obama. “Moral compass,” begins Corgan. “And that’s where I’m disappointed in [President Obama], he ran on a moral compass agenda but what happened? I’m sure there’s lots of good reasons, and I’m sure they’ll roll somebody out to counter thoughts like that, but I don’t see it. I travel the world, I’ve seen foreigners really shift on their view of America, and that’s hard for me to take. I still believe in my country, I know that the working class of this country is what this country is really about, that’s what I grew up in these are my people. I see them broken down, that’s hard to watch.”
