Schenectady Woman Delivers Baby in Apartment, Becomes a ‘Hometown Hero’

This week’s “Hometown Hero,” Diana Wahid, of Schenectady, became what some may call a “hero” after she delivered a baby in her own apartment building.

Diana Wahid works as a housekeeper but had the surprise of her life when she delivered a baby.

One night Diana, who works as a housekeeper, was sleeping and woke up to a telephone call a little after midnight. As it was unusual for people to be calling her home so late, Diana and her husband knew something was wrong. On the other end of the phone was Diana’s tenant who urged her to go check on his pregnant wife and call 911. While on the phone, Diana realized that the woman was going into labor and that the baby would arrive before help.

So, with phone assistance from emergency responders, Diana was able to deliver the woman’s baby safely.

Diana had never done something like this and was proud that she could help save not only the baby’s life, but her tenant’s as well. She said that “with the help of 911, people can do anything.”

“Even though help was not physically there, I still felt their presence,” she said.

Once help did arrive, the EMTs cut the baby’s umbilical cord and made sure all was well with both mother and baby.

As part of the “Hometown Heroes” series, we’ve partnered with County Waste, Latham Ford, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region and Awards by Walsh to celebrate local unsung heroes for their good deeds and honorable work.
