Police were called to the Imperial Motel on State Street in Schenectady on Saturday after reports of a gun being fired. When they arrived they found 21-year-old Joseph Hewitt with gun shot injury to his groin.

Hewitt was carrying the gun in his waistband when it discharged a round hitting him. He would then be transported to the Albany Medical Center for further medical care after treatment from Schenectady Fire Department officials.

The handgun in question was reported missing from North Carolina and Hewitt is not legally able to carry a firearm due to prior criminal convictions. He is now charged with one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon (2nd Degree), one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon (3rd Degree), and one count of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property (4th Degree).
