If there is indeed only one way to rock then Sammy Hagar is a true virtuoso at the craft. For his latest touring project, ‘A Journey Through the History of Rock,’ the Red Rocker has assembled his own motley crew of insanely talented musicians who have hit the road, educating the masses in the best way humanly possible: with a down and dirty rock show.

The show is a feast for classic rock fans offering up a smorgasbord of tunes from Hagar’s solo catalog and Montrose days, smash hits from his tenure with Van Halen and a handful of classic Led Zeppelin tunes. Helping him pull it all off is good friend and former Van Halen bandmate Michael Anthony on bass, Jason Bonham, son of legendary Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham on drums and Vic Johnson from the Waboritas joining Hagar on guitar.

Whether fans fell in love with Hagar during his solo career or during his stint with Van Halen, it’s doubtful anyone anticipated the intensity with which he attacked the Led Zeppelin songs. From ‘Good Times Bad Times’ to ‘Whole Lotta Love,’ ‘When the Levee Breaks,’ and ‘Rock and Roll,’ Hagar’s passion for the music led the way through a set that didn’t offer even a shadow of a dull moment.

With each member capable of shining brightly on their own merits, they combined forces to transform into a four-headed rock n’ roll wrecking machine. Barreling through the 20-song set, the highlights were so plentiful they were hard to keep track of. While Sammy is the star and driving force of the show, each of his bandmates were given the opportunity to take center stage and deliver their own offerings to the crowd. It was within those moments that Jason Bonham served up a masterful drum solo and touching tribute to his father, leaving a lasting impression on the sold-out crowd at the Casino Ballroom in Hampton Beach, NH.

Another bonus, albeit bittersweet, was hearing those sorely missed Michael Anthony harmonies chime in on the Van Halen songs. With a healthy dose of 1986’s ‘5150,’ the all-star band jammed their way through ‘Why Can’t This Be Love,’ ‘Best of Both Worlds’ and ‘Dreams’ from Hagar’s first offering with VH. ‘OU812’ and ‘For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge’ were represented as well with tracks like ‘When It’s Love,’ ‘’Poundcake’ and ‘Right Now.’

Overall, the show delivered as promised – a musical traipse through rock’s rich history acted out by some of the best left in the business. The best part of all was they were having a blast doing it from start to finish.

Although he’s branched out into many different side projects from bars to booze, Hagar’s true passion continues to be music and performing on the live stage and it’s good to see that while he might be currently revisiting the history of rock, his own is far from over.
