Red Sox Continue Success Against Yankees

Boston continues to be a thorn in the side of the New York Yankees this season.  The Red Sox take the first game of the series 6-4.

For the 6th time this season the Boston Red Sox walk away from the New York Yankees with a win.  They have been in control of the season series between the two teams this year and are the kryptonite to the Yankee pitching.

Things did not go well for starter Freddy Garcia who gave up 3 runs in the first inning, including a homer to Jacoby Ellsbury.  Garcia also gave up an RBI triple to Adrian Gonzalez before leaving early in the second inning.  He takes the loss, his 5th of the season.  Jon Lester went 6 innings and gave up 3 runs, but the damage by Boston had already been done.

The Yankees could be without first baseman Mark Teixeria for a few games due to a bruised knee suffered after being hit by a pitch by Jon Lester in the first inning.  A scary moment for NY since Tex has been big help to them on the offensive side, he leads the team with 18 home runs.  X-Rays were taken and they were negative but Manager Joe Girardi says that he will be a day to day decision.

David Ortiz hit a two run homer off young Yankee reliever Hector Noesi, after which he did a little bat flip.  That move didn’t sit very well with Joe Girardi who felt that is might get to the young pitcher and affect his confidence.

Yeah, I didn’t really care for it. I’ve never had a problem with David Ortiz. He’s been a clutch player for a long time. My reaction’s probably more protecting our young kid. And that’s what I’m going to do.

-Yankee Manager Joe Girardi

Jonathan Papelbon picked up his 200th save in the win last night.  Papelbon is in the middle of an appeal with the league after being suspended for making contact with an umpire Saturday when he blew a save opportunity.

Yankees and Red Sox will do it again tonight 7pm.  This time AJ Burnett will battle knuckle baller Tim Wakefield.
