The first photos of Ronald Poppo, the victim in that horrific face-chewing incident in Miami, have been released. Although doctors say Poppo remains positive and upbeat, the evidence of what he’s been through is brutally apparent.

Back on May 26, Poppo, a 65-year-old homeless man, was attacked by a deranged person who chewed off about half his face. Police later shot and killed the attacker, and it wasn’t until Poppo arrived at the hospital that doctors discovered one of those bullets had also hit Poppo.

Medical staff at Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital report Poppo is recovering from the ordeal very well, despite losing his nose and right eye during the assault. He’s even been cheering on the hometown Miami Heat from his hospital bed.

“He’s coping remarkably well,” trauma surgeon Nicholas Namias said, adding, “The guy has got to be a survivor.”

Poppo has already had three surgeries — including skin grafts — and there are more to come. He’s expected to remain in the hospital indefinitely, and after his wounds heal, doctors will determine whether he’s a candidate for a face transplant.
